In an effort to give her husband Bard a memorable 40th birthday gift, Charla Muller made a pact: the two of them agreed to have sex every day for a year, an experiment which both agree has transformed their marriage.

Their project, which is documented in 365 Nights: A Memoir Of Intimacy, surprised them both with the level of daily kindness it required. As Charla noted, “incorporating intimacy into real life” is important, and can contribute to a lasting and satisfying relationship.

Elisabeth, who was featured on the cover of Fitness magazine soon after giving birth to her son, says that people who train in hopes of achieving a certain look are probably more susceptible to the phenomenon than people who train to become strong and healthy.

Joy suggests that people would be more likely to work out if casino gaming screens or other entertainment consoles are built into treadmills and bicycles.

The ladies have been enjoying themselves in Las Vegas. Although most of the co-hosts have restricted their spending to smaller bets, Joy and Whoopi have been more adventurous in their gambling. Still, they both maintain that they have simply “broken even,” in order to deflect trouble from unscrupulous people who would part them from their winnings.

Joy says that the practice was common in the neighborhood in which she was raised; gamblers never revealed their winnings, preferring instead to have others believe that they have neither won nor lost anything.

Elisabeth and Sherri, who have young children, often feel the same misgivings as other working mothers, who worry that their time away from their children will be detrimental. Elisabeth mentioned the “guilty gift” phenomenon, in which mothers purchase souvenirs and toys for their children; Sherri spoke about flying back and forth between New York and Los Angeles to see her son, Jeffrey.

Although many mothers feel guilt about working outside of the home, most do not have other options.

Vegas.com states that Las Vegas’ service-based economy relies heavily on tips. As such, it provides information about who, when, and how much to tip.

Sherri says that she learned from speaking with hotel staff that one should not wait until departure to leave a tip for room cleaning staff. She says that the staff may rotate, and the tip left at the end may not be divided among everyone who worked in the room for the length of the guest’s stay. Instead, a smaller daily tip ensures that each person receives the gratuity for his or her day’s work.

When in the casino, Whoopi tips the dealer if she wins a table game, while Joy thinks that such tips are optional.

The advent of dating websites has made the world of mingling more accessible and easier to navigate for many searching singles. The benefits of online dating systems are numerous; perhaps the most useful feature is the ability to find potential mates who fulfill certain specified criteria.

Unfortunately, people may at times exaggerate or embellish profiles in order to appear more attractive. An article in the New York Times suggests that men tend to lie about height and professions on the sites, while women generally fib about age.

Elisabeth suggests that people should make themselves look slightly worse on the sites, so that dates are pleasantly surprised when the two meet in person; Barbara counters that such people would not be offered dates in the first place.

Last night, the ladies of The View enjoyed some of Las Vegas‘ unique nightlife options.

All of the co-hosts ate at Rao’s, an Italian restaurant that has its origins in New York City. After dinner, Whoopi, Joy, Elisabeth, and Barbara saw Bette Midler perform; the Divine Miss M has a two-year engagement for her hit, “The Showgirl Must Go On,” which has returned to the Caesars Palace Colosseum.

Sherri, meanwhile, spent the evening enjoying the music of Morris Day and the Time. All of the ladies recommended George Wallace’s comedy routine, which he performs at the Flamingo.

Walgreens sponsored The View’s trip to Las Vegas, and is encouraging people to visit the Take Care Health Tour bus for screenings and advice.

The debate about whether one’s sexuality is an inborn trait, or whether it can be influenced by external environmental factors, has raged on for decades. Recently, however, scientists conducted a study which they feel proves that sexuality is not a choice.

Apparently, the research compared the brains of heterosexual and homosexual men and women, as seen through MRI scans. The brain activation patterns that emerged suggested that people are, in fact, born gay or straight.

The proliferation of dog-friendly places is making some uncomfortable; canine friends are now welcome in shopping malls, airplanes, and even at church.

The New York Post reported that the Church of the Holy Trinity on Manhattan’s Upper East Side has a faithful pup following; though it may seem strange to some, church members don’t seem to mind.

As Joy says, if all dogs go to heaven, they have to go to church first!

Sherri asked the co-hosts and the audience whether she is obligated to tell her friend the truth; the ex’s business, personal, and family successes will stand in sharp contrast to her friend’s situations, and can result in hurt feelings and disappointment.

Joy says that in such a no-win situation, Sherri should take Barbara’s advice: mention the meeting, but don’t elaborate more than necessary.

Dr. Jorge Rodriguez visited The View to express his concern about what he calls an “HIV pandemic,” which is affecting women of color in the United States.

Because people can have the virus for years before showing symptoms, it can spread unnoticed when people have more than one sexual partner. Whoopi reminds the audience that everyone should be careful, however, as HIV can be transmitted through other channels as well.

Rodriguez argues that people suffer from a false sense of security about their risk of contractingHIV and AIDS; he encourages everyone to take advantage of the free testing that will be available in some communities next Friday for National HIV Testing Day. There are also home testing kits available from Home Access, though Rodriguez recommends visiting a professional who can offer counseling and advice, in addition to the test results.

Do couples need to get married to complete their relationships? A story presented on Good Morning America suggests that brides who have been left at the altar report mixed feelings about marriage.

While some people who maintain long-term relationships without marriage (as Joy has for the past 26  years) feel that they can enjoy the same level of commitment as people who do opt to be wed, Elisabeth and Sherri pointed out some practical considerations that may influence one’s decision.

For those whose weddings are religious ceremonies, the practice represents a commitment of faith, which Sherri says is more valuable than a piece of paper. Married couples enjoy spousal privilege in litigation; further, a spouse to whom money is bequeathed after a partner’s death is not subject to estate tax, as children are.

Some states have laws permitting common-law marriage, in which a couple is considered married after living together and performing the actions characteristic of married couples, despite not being united legally.

An article on CNN.com reveals some of the annoying habits people encounter in the workplace from boorish or thoughtless co-workers.

Elisabeth believes that only certain people should be confronted; wayward colleagues should be notified about their behavior, while the boss is off limits. Whoopi disagrees, saying that anyone who invades a worker’s personal space and impedes the ability to work well should be confronted.

The question of whether to broach other awkward topics also came up. Situations such as telling strangers about problems with their clothing or publicly disapproving of a friend’s romantic interest are difficult, but speaking up may be beneficial.

New York Magazine published an article in their June 9 issue entitled “The Breakfast Manifesto,” which examined myths and facts about breakfast and shared results of a taste-test of many popular breakfast foods.

According to the article, breakfast still reigns as the most important meal of the day; people who eat breakfast can concentrate better (leading to improved performance at work or school), have more energy, and can manage their weight more easily. 

The ideal breakfast includes whole grains, such as cereal, protein, like milk or yogurt, colorful fruits, and 8 ounces of juice. For those who prefer meat at breakfast, experts recommend lean bacon, which is easier on the arteries than fattier choices. When it comes to juice, opt for 100% orange, grapefruit, or prune juice; concentrated juices, especially pear, grape, and apple, are little more than flavored sugar water.

Some sleep research suggests that although sleep requirements vary by person,”night owl” or “morning person” distinctions can determine much of an individual’s trajectory in life. One’s career, mood, hobbies, and even geographic preference can be traced to the hours one typically devotes to sleep.

The advent of the 24-hour day suggests that our society doesn’t prioritize sleep, even though sleep experts recommend 7-8 hours of nighttime sleep, as well as a daytime nap.
